Four Ways to use Rice in the Household
Surprise! None of them involve cooking. 🙂
According to Brand South Africa, more than 700 million tonsof rice is produced globally every year. In South Africa, the amount of rice we consume is rapidly increasing. But is it just that our tasty recipes are fuelling your rice cravings, or are South Africans finding more ways to use rice in their homes?
Here are five great ways that you can use rice in your home:
1. Make your own heating pad
Here’s a cool trick to stay warm on wintery nights. Take a large old sock or small pillow case, fill it with rice and sew it closed then pop it in the microwave for 5 to 10 minutes, which should keep you warm for up to an hour.
2. Save your phone from water damage
Having your phone exposed to water if it’s not waterproof is one of modern life’s tragedies. But, as long as you have some rice, all is not lost. Put your phone in a container filled with rice. The little grains will help to draw the moisture from your device.
3. Make a brown rice face wash
Did you know that brown rice has the highest vitamin E count of all rice variants? Use the remaining water after cooking your rice as a face wash once it’s cooled down. This will help to add radiance to your skin.
4. Ripen any fruit fast
Incessantly checking whether fruit are ripe yet don’t actually make them ripen faster. But, placing your unripe fruit in a container filled with rice does! The rice draws moisture from the fruit so they’ll be soft and succulent within two days.
5. Keep tools from rusting
When metal tools are exposed to moisture, they will begin to rust and can become more dangerous than useful. Keep your tools in perfect working condition by adding a cup or two of rice to your tool box. The rice will draw most of the moisture in the air, making sure that your tools stay dry.
