It’s Movember!
Over the last few years, we’ve seen men get excited at the prospect of November approaching. Why? Because during this month, men often allow their moustaches to go wild and grow a life of their own, with everyone getting to appreciate the view!
But what is so special about November and moustaches? How is it that the two go together so well? Enter: Movember!
Many months of the year are dedicated to various causes and interests. February for heart disease, October for breast cancer, AIDS in December. And so in November, we celebrate and look after the men in our lives. Men are less prone to talk about illnesses and to visit a doctor for checkups, so to create an environment where they are free to speak about things that they wouldn’t ordinarily speak about is ideal. It’s changing the way men view health issues.
Fun fact: You have to start out with a cleanly shaven face on the 1st of November.
Movember is meant to be fun, but it also encourages men to look into the medical history of their family. It also encourages them to live generally healthier lives via diet and exercise to promote healthy bodies that can fight off illness. The Movember Foundation started in Australia and was brought about to show support for those suffering from male-related illnesses such as prostate and testicular cancer, as well as mental health issues such as depression. It is an annual international event that raises money for charities around the world.
Fun fact: the moustache is a ribbon for men’s health, worn on your face!
You can register with the movement internationally by visiting the Movember Foundation online, or check to find some local campaigns. With the emphasis on the male community as a whole, you’ll see many, many men partaking by growing their beard. Why not start something in your office or amongst your friends? The one with the most impressive beard at the end of the month gets to choose the charity, and all men involved spare some cash to put in the pot. May the best man win!
So this month, let’s shine a light on the men in our lives!
