Spekko Rice Celebrity Cook-Off Pop-up Event is all the Rage
If at all, you know your saffron from your turmeric, your milk tart from your pasteis de nata and your steak knife from your chef’s knife – and you can write about and cook a decent biryani – you would probably have been invited to take part in one of the Spekko Rice Celebrity Cook-offs which regularly take place in Cape Town.
It was around Valentine’s Day, a year or so ago, that, in a first for Spekko Rice, the brand embarked on a series of Celebrity Cook-Off Pop-Up events at The Market at the Palms.
Over the months, we have seen food writers such as Huisgenoot, You and Drum food editor Carmen Niehaus; Herman Lensing, food editor Sarie magazine; Abigail Donnelly, food editor Taste magazine and Vicky de Beer, food editor Rooi Rose have match their skills against food bloggers, street food purveyors and executive chefs.
In a recent and exciting development, participating chefs not only tried to outdo each other with the best rice dish of the day, but also cooked for a party of top food writers.
Chef Hope Malau, food editor for Drum Magazine, Jaco Brand, well-known forager and owner of Picardi, and Chef Sebastian Newman, resident chef for SABC 3’s Expresso shows, sharpened their knives for the winter cook-off.
Esteemed guests included amongst others, Chris von Ulmenstein – possibly the most influential local and some say “feared” food blogger of Whale Cottage Portfolio Blog”: www.whalecottage.com; Hein van Tonder – famed photographer and food blogger of “Hein Stirred”: www.heinstirred.com; Pia Alexa Duarte – Food editor Fair Lady magazine; Adele Maartens, owner of Cape Town’s The Good Life Food Truck; Lizet Hartley, Melkkos & Merlot blogger, www.melkkos-merlot.co.za; Esther Malan, assistant food editor Huisgenoot & You magazines and Haydee Muller from RSG.
Hope wowed with his Cape style kedgeree with smoked snoek, Jaco prepared a waterblommetjiebredie – with waterblommetjies foraged himself, and Sebastian made deep fried white chocolate arancini balls served with ice cream and hot caramel sauce.
