“Old and New, Bitter and Sweet” Spekko Rice Celebrity Cook-Off
Heritage South African food is under the spotlight this weekend at The Palms Market in Woodstock where Spekko Rice will be staging another first: The launch of a new cookbook and a Celebrity cook-off with recipes from the book.
Neil Stemmet’s new book “bitter+soet” and the English equivalent “bitter+sweet gives a nostalgic view on his life and the food that shaped these memories.
Recipes include “Smoorsnoek”; Oumies Johanna’s carrot bredie”; “Farm sausage with cabbage and pumpkin”; “Alie’s baked fish” and “Sweet and sour chicken”.
The celebrities who will be cooking, include Barbara Joubert, food editor Sarie Kos; Martelize Brink, RSG morning presenter; Anida van der Spuy of Kamers vol Geskenke and Nina Timm, Eat Out Blogger of the Year.
The event will be hosted by Reinhardt Ludick from Smile fm.
Another highlight of the day is the crocheting of a mammoth blanket by the crochet groups The Woodstock Hookers and Hekel in die Kaap. The blanket will be auctioned off during the morning with funds going to The Haven Night Shelter at the Moira Henderson House in Woodstock.
Dave Ferguson will be performing live.
To add to the nostalgic day, the market will also include their now famous Kattebak/ Vintage bric a brac section.
The market operates from 9am – 3pm and the cook-off is staged between 10am and 12pm.
The address is: The Palms Décor & Lifestyle Centre, 145 Sir Lowry Rd, Woodstock, (021) 462 0394. www.palms.co.za
