Mother’s Day with Spekko Rice

The 2nd Spekko Rice Celebrity Cook-Off takes place this Saturday at The Palms in Woodstock. Its mother’s day weekend and 6 celebrity chefs will cook a Spekko Rice dish to take their mother or a loved one a gourmet taste holiday.

Ingredients will include one of the Spekko “best rice variants of the world collection”, inclusive of the fragrant Spekko Royal Umbrella Jasmine Rice from Thailand and the Spekko India Gate Classic Basmati Rice from India.

To add spice these 6 celebrity chefs will show their skills:

• Donald Paul – financial journalist and entrepreneur who started The Big Issue in SA and was consulting editor for Drum in East Africa.
• Le Roux van Vuuren – a Kokkedoor Season 2 contestant and owner of the quaint seafood restaurant Lekka by die See in Langebaan.
• Hein Scholtz – writer of the cookbook Munch.
• Neil Stemmet, author of two cookbooks including Salt + Pepper which includes nostalgic food recipes from his blog www.soutenpeper.co.za.
• Alit Swanepoel – from Aleit wedding events.
• Damien Fettish from Fetty’s Street Food

The judges who will have their say are:

1. Carmen Niehaus – food editor Huisgenoot & You
2. Anel Potgieter – winner of the title Eat Out Blogger of the Year
3. Vanessa Marx – Eat Out Rising Star of the Year
4. Anida van der Spuy – food technologist and organiser of the deli/ food section of the successful Kamers Vol Geskenke markets.

Spekko’s Celebrity Cook-Off pop-up events takes place in conjunction with Sarie Magazine blogger and market stallholder Isabella Niehaus. These regular events are staged at The Palms Décor & Lifestyle Center where gourmands make their way every Saturday. It is not only the organic produce on sale that draws the crowds,but also the month-end brocante markets or “kattebak” sales.

“This market has grown into a real gem – a platteland atmosphere, people and characters of note, trading like the good old days on the village square. You won’t get it more real, friendly and personal”, says Isabella Niehaus.

The day will include the usual 40 plus market stalls, entertainer Lize Mynhardt and of course free entry and parking.
